A Roanoke Original Since 1959

Colony House was born in an era when road trips ruled and motels were modern marvels. Completed in 1959 by Richard Trent and Horace Fralin, this mid-century motor lodge was a bold, design-forward outpost on the southern edge of Roanoke — pitched roofs, pink tile bathrooms, and all.

Over the decades, Colony House hosted everyone from NFL legend Johnny Unitas to British pop stars Herman’s Hermits, welcoming guests with charm, character, and comfort. Locals called it the “guest room of South Roanoke.” Travelers called it a hidden gem.

And not much has changed — on purpose.

The motel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a prime example of roadside Googie architecture.

We’ve kept the original spirit alive, with thoughtful upgrades that honor the past while embracing the now. The rooms are still airy and bright. The vibe is still easy and relaxed. And the commitment to warm, personal service is as strong as ever.

Today, Colony House is a design-conscious, locally owned hotel for those who value character over cookie-cutter. It’s a place to rest, reconnect, and rediscover what hospitality used to feel like.

Welcome back to Colony House.
